Eureka’s Old Town is located just off Highway 101, about 6 hours north of San Francisco and about 2 minutes south of the Oregon border, in the heart of California’s redwood forests.
Driving
FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
Take Highway 101 north to Eureka. In town, the highway becomes 5th Street. Turn left at F Street. Old Town begins just across 4th Street.
FROM THE SACRAMENTO AREA
Most Eurekans take Interstate 5 and cross the Trinity Alps on 299. Once in Redding, follow the signs for 299 West, which will involve taking surface streets for a few miles. Highway 299 is a beautiful but windy mountain road that dead ends at Highway 101 on the coast. Take 101 South to Eureka, where it becomes 4th Street. Turn right on F Street and you are in Old Town. Travel time is 5 to 6 hours.
The alternate route from Sacramento has fewer curves, but can take an extra 30 minutes. The alternate route is advised during winter storms, as 299 is sometimes closed due to snow. Take I-5 north to Highway 20 West. The exit is just north of Williams. Follow 20 to Highway 101 and head north to Eureka. In town, the highway becomes 5th Street. Turn left at F Street. Old Town begins just across 4th Street.
FROM OREGON
Take Highway 101 South along the coast to Eureka. In town, the highway becomes 4th Street. Turn right at F Street and you are in Old Town. From Central Oregon, use Highway 199 to Crescent City, and then follow 101 South.
By Air
Eureka is conveniently served by the Arcata/Eureka Airport (airport code ACV), located 16 miles north of Eureka at 3561 Boeing Avenue, in McKinleyville, California. United and Alaska-Horizon airlines offer regular flights.
